Whoever said “dying is easy but comedy is difficult” should have a baby in Mexico. Dying here is easy, however getting your Mexican-born baby out of the country is a little trickier. In 1998, a baby was born to an American couple at the hotel where I work. The baby surprised them by coming earlier than expected. While the birth was fine, the paperwork involved was horrendous and the baby would have been graduating college by the time his paperwork was straightened out, had it not been for the persuasion of key people. The Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores, Migracion, US Consulate and local officials were all involved because the baby was a Mexican citizen.
