This page will explain step by step how to create a new page with this thing called a kwiki. Today (Feb 16, 2005) I had the opportunity to listen on the phone while someone attempted to add a new page, and was able to understand the confusion that resulted. I'll try to clear that up here.
If you've never used the system before, it might be a good idea
to set up your user preferences. Look for the icon at the top
of the page that looks like this:
and click on it. Fill out the little form you find there, and
in particular, enter your KwikiUserName, for example
HenryLaxen. When you are done, click on the save button.
Now it is decision time. Suppose you want to add a new page
about a certain charity, say, the Mazatlan Humane Society. You
should come up with a KwikiName for that page, say
AmigosDeLosAnimales. A KiwkiName is just a word with more than
one capital letter in it, so stringing together a short phrase
should work. Okay, so click on the new page icon at the top of
page you are one. It looks like this:
and enter
the name for you page in the box, then click on the CREATE
button. You will wind up on a new empty page. You will get a
new page, with a SAVE and PREVIEW button on the top, and a 6
digit code, that looks something like this:
underneath, with a textbox to the right of the code. The reason
for this code is to make life a little harder for spammers.
Below that will be a large empty textbox. Just type, (or copy and paste) whatever you want to say, enter the code number in the textbox next to it, and click on the SAVE button. Voila, you have edited (and posted) your changes for all to see.
A couple of hints:
chances are you can hit the BACK button in your browser, and go back to the page you were just editing. You may have to enter a different number at the top however.
the bottom of whatever you posted, along with the date that you made your changes. It helps people get a feeling for how the page has evolved.
Now that you have created a page, it is time to think about how
to help others find it more easily. We should take a look at
the current structure of the wiki, and see if it would be
apropriate to link it in somewhere. Click on the little
Home icon that looks like this:
and you will be take to the Home page (like a table of contents)
of this wiki. Notice that a link to your new page has NOT
magically appeared here, nor anywhere else for that matter.
Looking down the page, we see an existing link to a page called
Charity. Perhaps that would be a good place to add a link to
our new page. If you click on the Charity link, you will see a
page come up with some info about charities. Click on the
little Edit Page icon, that looks like this:
and as above, you will have a chance to edit this page. While
on that page, suppose you notice that someone else posted some
information about Charity that no longer exists here. Go ahead
and remove the lines that refer to that charity, and somewhere
near the bottom of the page you add:
AmigosDeLosAnimales - The Humane Society of Mazatlan HenryLaxen - Feb 16, 2005
Now after you enter the 6 digit number and click on SAVE, the Charity page will have been edited by you, and reflect your changes.
Finally notice the little icon on the top of the page that looks
like this:
If you click on that icon, the wiki will go and find all the
pages that have been changed recently, and display them for
you. The new page you added, and the Charity page you edited
should appear near the top of the list. If you think it would
be helpful to have other pages link to your page, go ahead and
add those links too, even if it means you wind up editing the
Home Page!
Editing the Home Page! It sounds like a recipe for chaos, but I promise you it isn't, you are just not used to being able to write on somebody else's web page, until now!

===Spam
If you add a link to a page, do not worry if it shows up looking like http://some.link.to.somewhere.com/ This is a spam prevention feature, to discourage spammers from polluting the wiki. Just add the link to UnSpamThisLink and I'll should get to it withing a few days.
