We are planning on moving to Mexico within the year but have been leaning towards moving to Puerto Vallarta. Partly because its a smaller town and partly because we know so little about other coastal cities. What other factors do I need to consider that might make one town a better choice than the other?

Here is my *

You hit all the reasons my wife and I choose Mazatlan instead of PV! Mazatlan has lots of shopping (Sam's Club, Wal-Mart, Gigante, 4 Ley superstores, soon to be 2 Soriana superstores, Mega, Office Max, etc. PV does not.

  • We have a Gold Zone. They have a Gold Zone.
  • We have Old Town. They have a Gold Zone.
  • We have 12 miles of beaches. They have 2 miles of beaches.
  • We have the Angela Peralta Theater. They have a Gold Zone.
  • We have Plaza Machado. They have a Gold Zone.
  • We have a big city that feels like a small town. They have a small town that feels like a big city.

Your choice of course, but I would give it some more thought. Spend a month or two in each place before you decide. I have clients moving here from PV. I have none moving from here TO PV.

A Perfect Day in Mazatlan

Patricia O'Connor - February 16, 2005

Every day in Mazatlan is a gift, but my perfect day would begin with a leisurely breakfast on the sidewalk at Marismeño in Olas Altas, maybe a delicious fresh fruit platter or huevos rancheros with salsa, while enjoying the sea breeze and the fabulous ocean view. Then, a walk up past the Pedro Enfante monument to a spot high on the malecòn to watch the young surfers ride the waves rolling into the bay.

King David's would pick me up for the King David Jungle Tour and we would head off in the boat through the mangroves watching the bird life to a secluded spot where we would be greated with appetizers and have time to explore the farm, feed the chickens, and spot the various trees laden with limes and mangoes. Then, we would head to the sandy beach for a romp in the ocean. If we were lucky, there would be baby sea turtles to release into the water. Much too soon, we would head back to the farm for a delicious meal, then into the boat for the trip home. On the way home, the guide would call in the pelicans, giving us a rare opportunity to see them close up and to take photos as they fly and land all about us.

Upon return, I would stroll to the Angela Peralta Theater adjacent to Plaza Machado and pay 10 pesos for a self-guided tour. The place would be empty except for a music student on stage practicing piano and playing beautifully. I would take a seat in the back and listen. After the private concert, I would climb the stairs across the courtyard from the theater and read about the history of the theater, the person it is named for, and the plague that came on the ship with her and took so many lives.

Reluctantly, I would leave the beautiful Angela Peralta and walk half a block to Plaza Machado where I would choose one of the many restaurants for a leisurely meal. While I ate, there would be music drifting in while families visited in the Plaza and played with their children.

If it were still early enough, I would end the day by walking back to the malecòn to sit on the wall and watch one of Mazatlan's glorious sunsets.

Top Ten Reasons To Be In Mazatlan

by JackMoreau March 16,2005

Counting backwards from 10 these are the reasons my wife and I feel Mazatlan is the best place to be.

10. Castles in the sand with a view of the green flash at sunset.

9. Land of the deer, plenty of the two legged variety and also those Venados - go team go.

8. Pulmonias, catch a ride, catch a cold.

7. Carnaval, 3rd largest fiesta in the world and the best confetti you’ve ever tasted.

6. Restaurants, eat so much PESO little.

5. Fresh beer, refined here, always near.

4. Bull fights, and sometimes the bull wins.

3. Buy fish on sale, or go catch a sail fish.

2. No chip n dales, but shrimp and peel.

and the number one reason Mazatlan is the best place to be…..

1. No shirt, no shoes, no hay problema.

Our motto is too much of a good thing is wonderful!
