In order to get an FM-3 you must have a valid passport. It is not possible to work on a tourist permit, so El Cid can fill you in on all of that. An working permit costs close to $200.00 USD and is valid for a year. It entitles you to work only at the place that supplies you with the written job offer, stating your prospective earnings. I know someone working for El Cid that has an FM-3 and someone else that does not, because he is only here for a couple of months (but that is risky, and could shorten your stay in Mexico abruptly). It is a big chance to take and most employers will not circumvent the rules due to hefty fines. They should certainly be discussing this with you upfront. Marlene.

There is no work permit for foreigners in Mexico. It is part of an FM3 visa, so to legally work you must get the FM3 visa with the necessary permissions. It shouldn't cost more than $150US.
