Summary of Veterinary meeting at Shelter April 26, 2005

  1. New * Dra Delia Morales
  2. Shelter; Adoption center, not an animal shelter Sign on outside shelter wall no veterinary service at this location Eliminate misconception that shelter offers free veterinary service
  3. Donating * Discuss why animal not wanted, justify reasons vs our abilities; animal must be adoptable. (health, personality) Owner's responsibility to have inappropriate animals euthanized, shelter must not be seen as killing ground. Not necessary to accept every animal, create and use waiting list, maintain close contact with donating owner
  4. Incoming * 3 day quarantine discussed All incoming animals must be treated for fleas/tics upon arrival
  5. Registration * Format for Dogs, Cats, Puppies Sheet for every animal placed on clipboard on corresponding cage Front w/ personality, back w/ brief check-up, medications received, veterinarian services needed
  6. Vet * All veterinary issues to be presented to Rafael, not to Daniel. Veterinarian roster on wall, appointments rotated one by one If vet unavailable, next in line immediately contacted, absolutely no waiting. Goal of obtaining more vets (Vidal?) Importance of doing quality work though at a discounted price
  7. * Spaying to be done at clinics, not at shelter Shelter leaves animal at veterinarian clinic night before; animal must be clean, treated for tics/fleas, delivered in clean cage. Veterinarian operates following am, new owner retrieves convalescing animal from vet clinic, receives advice from vet on treatment and vaccinations. *Vouchers used for puppies and kittens, new owner makes commitment in writing to have animal spayed within given time frame.
