Jackie Peterson - 10 Apr 2003
Here are two great ways to get yourself into the holiday mood:
- The last concert of the Mazatlan Cultural Festival will be a winner: A selection of Christmas music played by the Sinaloa Orchestra of the Arts at 8 p.m. Thursday Dec. 19, 2002 at the Angela Peralta Theater. Tickets (reserved seating) are just 100 pesos each.
- The following night, in the Plazuela Machado, there will be a traditional Mexican posada with candlelight procession, singing, pinatas for the kids, probably some fireworks, a public dance to wrap things up.This one, of course, is free. It's supposed to start at 6 p.m. but probably won't get going until 6:30 or so. Still, if you want a word sheet of the posada lyrics, better get there by 6 as they're sure to run out of them.
Feliz Navidad!
Dress Code
Very few men wear suits in this climate -- except maybe to weddings and funerals. Slacks and a sports shirt with short or long sleeves will do, but please don't wear shorts, cut-offs or a tank top. Not only is that attire totally inappropriate for attendance at our fine theater, but it can get quite chilly in there when the air conditioning is going full blast.
Concerts
There wasn't a seat in the theater Friday night that cost more than 150 pesos, and there were much cheaper seats in the second and third balconies that went unoccupied. The sad truth is, the greater percentage of mazatlecos will gladly pay 200 pesos and more for a bedroom farce but fail to attend many of the fine concerts and recitals that are offered each winter for 50 pesos tops (less up in the balconies). And during the Mazatlan Cultural Festival (Nov. 1-Dec. 20), a number of events will be staged in the lobby, absolutely free of charge.
