One half block away from the central market on Angel Flores on the south side of is Chago's where Carlos greeted me with a smile. I lifted my chin and scraped my neck with my index finger hoping it was an international signal for a shave. He immediately motioned toward a chair for me to sit. I was laid back almost to horizontal and two batches of hot towels were soon on my face and pressed with gentle fingers. Some ointment that smelled really good was hand rubbed onto my face. Then a brush lathered all over my beard. Then lathered a second time. The straightrazer caressed my skin. His finger pulling my skin with the razor following. He applied more warm towels as I was thinking that he must be done - but no - more lather and razor going into great details - every whisker seemed to sliced off one at a time. I felt very relaxed despite a blade as sharp as any surgical instrument was only millimeters from my jugular. Carlos wiped the face with a towel and delicately trimmed any errant whiskers that he had missed. He must have enjoyed my reaction as he splashed a generous amount of astringent on my wide-eyed face. "Tequila" he said with a wide grin showing his pure white teeth one with a silver rimmed filling. As the stinging subsided he was using a fine brush to dust my face with a soothing powder. The chair was raised up and the towel removed and I thought that my pampering was over. Not at all. I felt a familiar hand on my shoulder holding me in my chair. A large hand-held machine was placed on my shoulder and switched on. The vibrations resounded through my neck and shoulders. He spent a couple of minutes rubbing the magic machine on my neck a upper back. The click of the off button awoke me to my senses and then "Is good senor?" "Bueno" is all that I could muster. I think he said "treinte y cinqo" and I stuffed a 50 peso note into his hand. When he came back with the change I said "No cambio" in exchange for a photograph of Carlos holding his straightrazor by his chest and a big smile. The fresh breeze hitting my face upon exiting Chago's brought as big a smile on my face. It was a great start to another great day in Mazatlan. My wife spent 2 hours at Royal spa for $40USD. Ithink I got the better deal.
