FANTASTIC SITE!! Thanks . . . Is is possible or practical to run a swamp cooler in the warmest months? It looks like your mid-day summer humidity runs in the 50-60% area which means benefit from such a device would be possible. Not like in the desert, certainly, but helpful. Of course, AC is really impractical in Maz with the cost of electricity, but running a swamp cooler in the pm should not be prohibitive (maybe 20% $ of AC). Anyway, any input for those who cannot or do not want to head upslope to Reno. :-) Any friends or neighbors who do this . . . Muchas Gracias!
Hi Henry and Nadine, Just found your website for the first time and must say it is wonderful. Full of great info, especially for those of us who have never been there. I reviewed your link on Chrissy's rental units and would like to email her with some questions, but did not see an email address for her. Would you be so kind to send me her email address? I have spent the last 4 summers in Ajijic, but would like to explore Mazatlan before deciding where to retire. Your assistance is appreciated. Also, if you know of more rental units (privately owned or otherwise) that may be of interest to me (I am a single 56 year old male, traveling alone), would appreciate that info also. Best regards Jim
My wife and I had our honeymoon in Mazatlan back in 1967 and we've gone back a few times since; the last time was 1997.(We spent over 3 years in Colombia since then.) We're retired now with interest in having a home there but not giving up our home here in California. Are there quite a few who do this? My wife is from Sinaloa, near Culiacan, and we both speak Spanish fluently. So as I see it, it's whether we can afford to do something like this or not. Are there a number of Americans living there who do not speak Spanish? I am a retired high school and adult Spanish teacher interested in teaching Spanish. What opportunities would I have? I'm told that the Guadalajara area would be better but I like being closer to CA. By the way, when does the Carnaval start? We're thinking of making a trip for either this Feb. or March. Thank you. Benjamin and Carmen Williams
Some where on MazTravel before you were hacked off I saw where you told how much you paid your House keeper and the hours she worked. Can you enlighten me as to where I saw that? Also do you have a written contract with her etc etc?
So happy to see you back online. Thank you for your site. We are in the process of buying a place in Mazatlan and have your site and Jim and Gustavo at Mazatlan realty to thank.
I am so glad this site is back online, it is an excellent source of information and always has a positive focus. Can anyone tell me if there is a place in Mazatlan to buy furniture? Rattan is preferred but any suggestions will be appreciated.
Going to be visiting Mazatlan for the first time next month for our anniversary trip. Being a diehard New England Patriots fan I have to see my team play each week so I am wondering if the sports bars there bring in all the NFL games or just the nationaly broadcast games. To differentiate, from your home television you can watch three games each Sunday between CBS & Fox but if you go to a U.S. sports bar they typically show every game being played thanks to Satellite and NFL Ticket. I know that the sports bars in the area will show NFL games but I am wondering if it is just limited to those two or three nationally broadcast games or if they can bring them all in. We'll be staying at Pueblo Bonito from 10/8 - 10/12. Gracias! P.S Great website!
Comments anyone? My husband wants to look around for retirement. I am not so sure. Other visits to Mexico have me concerned about bad conditions for children and animals. Is it safe to drive between Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. Are your homes safe? Do they like us? Thank-you for any information.
leave your comments here has a note from zilla well zilla has a virus that my norton anti virus caught the name of virus is MHTMLredir.exploit just thought I would let you know luv mazatlan go there every year vindy
We will staying at the Mayan Sea Garden(Av.Sábalo Cerritos/Zona Hotelera Norte), flying in from Houston in late September, and were considering renting a car. Could we instead utilize taxi or bus service? I am not sure how far the Sea Garden is from the Golden Zone, etc.and wondered if you had a recommendation. Thanks, Pat
Hi. I have been reading a bit on-line of different Mexican destinations ... and can see that so many people, like me, have such a fondness of Mexico... even if they have not been back in years. So, here is my "a long time ago" question. A long time ago - thirty years approx. I was in Mazatlan. I stayed in a trailer park across a small highway from the beach at the far north end of town ... past El Cid, and up over a big bridge. The surf was better ... the area way less populated (no hotels) ... but there were houses in the process of being built, right on the beach close to this trailer park area. The trailer park was part of a resort (funky though) ... you could also stay in casitas, oh, there were about 10 of them. The first row were on the beach. There was a berm of sand to climb, and then a bit down, and you were in the ocean! I think the name was Playa Esconditas ... but I may have that wrong. Do you know of this place? Does it still exist? Do you know any where in Mazatlan where you can stay in Casitas on the beach? Or could you recommend a place to stay that is not hotelish feelling ... authentico decor .... on or close to the beach? Thanks so very much.
Nadine & Henry! Your web site is very impressive!! A wealth of information obviously created with a great deal of labor! I have enjoyed Mazatlan and hope to go back soon. My first visit to Mazatlan required landing at the downtown airport. Staying at the best hotel-the Belmar- and eating at the Shrimp Bucket next to Stan Delaplane. (Now you know how old I am.) In following up on your information I discovered that we are near neighbors aqui en Reno. ?Intersante Noh? Muchas Gracias! Un viejo gringo. Jim Gallagher.
we are coming to Mazatlan Sept 11th and would like to hire a limousine to take us to El Moro (there are 8 of us). Also, we are celebrating our daughter's 12th birthday on Sept 12th - any ideas to make this day special would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
I loved your web site, I looked at it forever, at all your beautiful homes!!! I was thinking of planning a trip there and I happened to come across your site. It is very interesting. I would love to have a home that beautiful. I am sorry about your dog and your cat, we just recently lost our pomeranian named toby this year and it is very hard, I still cry when I think about him. But we just had a baby so she keeps my mind off of him some. anyways, your web site is awesome and your homes are gorgeous. Please email me if you know of any good hotels there around april or may, I am sure thats probably a cheap time to go isn't it. Our second anniversary is april 18th and we didn't have a honeymoon so we are planning it now! thats for the great site. and your pets are adorable! judy
8/26/04 Thank you for this site. I am going to Mazatlan in the near future and have enjoyed visiting this site to learn more, and become excited about my vacation. Enjoyed the pictures of your family and of the sites. I am looking forward to sitting on the beach, in the hot tub, dinning, shopping, and seeing the museums and history of the area. Adios, Mary
Great web site. It has been most helpfull in providing information about travel to and moving to Mazatlan. One piece of information that I have not been able to locate about Mazatlan is the presence of private American or International schools there. Do you know if there are? And if so, could you provide contact information. My family and I are considering moving to Mexico this summer and are reviewing differnt locations. We have two small children, ages 5 and 3, so schooling is a a big factor in our location decision. Any help would be appreciated.
Nadine & Henry, your website is terrific! We just came back from 7 days in Mazatlan, and prior to going - printed off most of your web content and took it with us. It was a terrific guide - everything from the best restaurants to most fun things to do. Thanks so much for the good advice - it realy was a lot of help. We had a blast!!!! Surfed every morning at Playa Bruja, and caught it ranging from waste high to 2 feet overhead. Very grindy and fast, fun waves. Copala / Concordia was a must see day trip - absolutely beautiful! Go on Wednesdays when the tour buses arent there, and you'll have the place to yourself. Rented a jet ski and explored the three offshore islands - lots of fun, birds and cranking around the bay at high speed. We also happened to be in the historic district on Sunday and just walked in and sat down in the cathedral for Sunday Mass - it was lovely. Lots of shopping and bargaining (boy, do you have to grind em! but its all fun). A piece of advice for travellers - rent a car, and explore. Theres so much to do in and around Mazatlan that you'll see much, much more that way. Best eats: Sheik - great food, realy nice wait staff, and an unbelievable view of crashing waves and Valentino's waterfall. Emerald - a new resort (still going up), but very good food and beautiful grounds. Call ahead or you'll get diss'ed at the gate. The food was good overall for the week, and much better health standards at the restaurants than I was used to from other Mexico travels. I made it clear of gastric adventures, but Tracy had a 1 1/2 day wipeout from eating at Parador Spanish restaurant (the bacon wrapped shrimp = poisonous). Night life was a bit less than expected - we hit the clubs but they cater mostly to a very young crowd, trance music, etc. Overall, a realy fun vacation. Thanks so much Nadine and Henry, your web guide was better than Fodors. By the way, our pictures came out stunningly - post card quality. If you want some for your site (cliff divers, Copola, cathedrals, local color), just let me know. Cheers, George
My husband and I visited Mazatlan in July, celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. It was a wonderful trip. We were there for one week. We stayed at the El Cid El Moro Tower. It was really nice. The resort was wonderful with a great staff. Many activities were held each day with a dinner show each night. Since this was our first trip to Mazatlan, we took the city tour which was very informative about the area. We also went to Stone Island. My husband and I would like to return to Mazatlan again. I would recommend this city to anyone.
hola. you guys! i've been on your site for DAYS!....congrats!...job well done!... i'm planning a trip there this fall/winter....already contacted carol, the real estate lady... i was in mazatlan many years ago before it was MAZATLAN....just a tiny fishing village w/only one hotel if i recall...i moved to mexico from my hometown N.Y.C.,and lived in acapulco, and the d.f., for many years....my girls, who are now grown speak the language fluently....when they speak spanish, ppl don't reply to them in ENGLISH!!...as they always do w/me!...lolol..never got rid of that gringa accent... this site is so comprehensive, one really doesn't have to ever leave it....packed w/info... muchas gracias, suzita...
Great site, very informative. I am planning a trip in mid December for a wedding I am attending. The wedding is at the El Cid Marina, but I have heard the Pueblo Bonito Mazatlan is nicer. What do you think? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks Kevin
Hi: Dave Karpinski a close friend of mine told me about your SITE. It's FANTASTIC!! I have never been to Mazatland, but after reviewing your great site and frequently E mailing Dave I have made up my mind to go on vacation to Mazatland and check it out. I am retired military. I checked out the Armed Forces Vacation Club and I am initially planning on staying at the El Cid. While I am there I wish to find someone who is honest, who speaks good English, someone I can hire to give me the complete skinny on Mazatland from A to Z. Once I have an answer to the hundreds of questions I have on Mazatland, I intend to move there and either buy or rent an apartment or home. I need your advice and assistance. ADVISE: Do you think a 1 week stay is enough or would 2 weeks be the better approach? ASSISTANCE: Dave Karpinski replied to my question about someone I could hire to help me out while there, he said "We found a great fellow in Mazatlan who is currently building his own home there and offers his services on an hourly basis to gringos who want help negotiating the administrative hassles in Mazatlan. He was great and very reasonable. Name is Lee Newman. I'm afraid our contact information on him is packed in the U.S. but check with Roger Culbertson -- he'll have a phone number and email for Lee. Roger is also a great source of information." Can you furnish me the E mail address and phone number of Lee Newman. Looking forward to your reply as well as meeting you in person when I arrive. Sincerely yours, Bob Gaudreau E Mail: chiefbobg1@mac.com Tel: 702-655-9377 Las Vegas, Nevada USA
Thank you so very much, I am a native of this very beautiful city and came to the US very young, I've seen some of the most astounding images of my home town ever, I even think I know where the old carpa olivera stood, as I remember swiming in some foundation pool a long time ago. Thank you for your efforts and keeping this website so updated.
My wife and I are coming to mazatlan on June 25th 2004 and I just wanted to say this web site is so informative and wonderful that it has excited me that much more to make the trip. My wife was born and raised in the village called EL Puente de Camotlan and we were just married in cancun. I have really enjoyed my trips to mexico it is a wonderful country and I am looking forward to my third trip to mexico which will be mazatlan. My wife visited mazatlan about eight years ago and loved the visit and is looking forward to coming back. thanks and see ya soon. Kelley Wilson and Ruby paredes Wilson
I forgot to say on my previous posting that we found our new home in Cerritos thanks to this website. The real estate section is fabulous and most of the listings are updated on a regular basis making the search easier. Thank you Henry and Nadine for helping make our dream come true. Your Notario is awsome! See you on the beach.
Our local cousulate says we must be retired to get an FM3. We aren't retired but we bought a home in Villas Del Mar on Cerritos and want to bring down some household items (not furniture) for it. Can we do that without an FM3 or can we get one in Mazatlan even though we are not retired? If we can bring down some items, what can and what can't we bring. Does anyone out there know the answer to this one?
Really helpful site! I grew up in Mexico and am now seriously thinking about retiring to Mexico in the near future. Mazatlan ranks high on our list of possible locations. However, I absolutely MUST have high speed internet access (dsl, cable, satellite)to sustain myself economically as we operate an internet business. Is this readily available in Mazatlan? We are also looking at Teacapan as we do like the seclusion. Would internet be available there? Or, is there private satellite internet available? We can buy the equipment here in the USA but I am concerned whether the Mex authorities would (1) allow us to bring it in (2) allow it to be installed and operated.
I love your site!! I went to Mazatlan for a couple weeks about 2 years ago with my family. It is one of the coolest places in the world. We all stayed at the penthouse sweet at torres mazatlan, and had a blast!! The penthouse was huge!! Two stories on the 10th floor, with hot tubs on every balcony, and a grill!!! Well i just wanted to tell you that I enjoyed your site, hope to see you in Mazatlan soon!!
Hi Henry and Nadine, I have been looking over your website. I have found interesting information. This information also leads to some questions. We will be staying at the El Cid Marina & Yacht Club. I know you don't offer opinions, but I hope it's nice. Your opinion is welcomed. How far is Sam's Club and Wal Mart from this hotel? Is the Wal Mart a Super Wal Mart (with groceries)? I read something about in certain restaurants the salad is safe to eat. This brings up the question is it safe to buy fresh fruit in the stores? Also one other thing was the mention of jelly fish in July and August. We will be there at the end of July. Are there really a lot of jelly fish or just some or a few? If you can find the time, I would appreciate a response. Also in reading some vistors responses on your website saved me approximately $100 on a car rental when I revisited the car rental site after reading the rate they had. Thanks.
My husband & I along with 2 of our friends went to Maz May 8-15. This website made our trip a wonderful experience! We went to Christine's a few times, massages, nails done (us girls) and to use the internet. She's a really sweet lady. I don't remember seeing mention of a GREAT place to eat that we found. Just down from El Moro tower (toward the Holiday Inn) is a place called Carlo's & Lucia's. They are the nicest people, and she makes THE BEST pancakes. We ate there almost everyday in the morning & had dinner there our last night. If we ever get to go back we will be there daily. For the person who said they wanted to read the book on the beach good luck with that. You can read pool side because the beach vendors aren't allowed on resort property, but the beach is fair game. We tried to catch some sun on the beach one day and were approached by no less than 30 beach vendors in about 10 minutes, it's like they were lining up to try to sell us stuff we didn't' want. I understand this is how they make a living, but it doesn't get old after a week & make's it hard to enjoy the beach. We liked El Cid, 2 for one margaritas, what's not to like! Only complaint there was no water pressure in the shower & the time share people got a little annoying (we were already there on time share) but just ignore them and they'll leave you alone eventually. My advise is go to Mazatlan & just enjoy yourself, you won't regret it!
We just returned from our one-week long honeymoon staying and enjoying the El Cid Marina & Yacht Club. We fell in LOVE with Mazatlan and are already making plans to return. Henry and Nadine's site is excellent and very accurrate! We felt like we had already been there by the time we got there we were so well acquainted with the area. Go, enjoy, and be prepared to want to stay forever. Henry or Nadine...if you are up to it, send us a line, we would love to visit with you via e-mail. Adios!
Could someone please tell me where I could get digital pictures developed in Mazatlan? Possibly Sam's Club? I'm going there at the end of this month and was wondering if that was even possible. Thanks!
We are going to visit the wonderful city of Mazaltan, on our (Robert and I)honeymoon... Your website has cleared up some questions about this wonderful, beautiful city. We will be down in Oct. and staying at El Cid Resorts~...1 question...If you do anything in Mazaltan what should it be? Site seeing? Sailing? What about cliff diving? Golf? Thank you Nadine & Henry!! it's been a trip :) RuthAnn Gilbert
Great web site!! My family and I will be traveling down to Mazatlan in just a couple weeks May 22nd to be exact. I was looking for a web site for some general informations and yours was the best one I have found tonight! We have never been to Mazatlan and we look forward to our trip.... Thanks for the information, I'm sure it will come in handy... Sincerley, Chantal Atwood Concord California
We will be traveling to Mazatlan around the 20th of May, 2004 with our 21 month daughter. Since she sleeps about 14-hours a day we would like to stay in a location where we can keep the doors open, hang out on a deck and enjoy the air, sun and ocean while still being near our sleeping child. Do you have any recommendations? Any advice would sincerely be appreciated. Thanks, Meadow Riedel
I scored a vacation trip to Mazatlan through America West Vacations:(RT air, 7 nights for less than $900.00) Delta pulled out of Spokane last year. Since then, I have been flying America West to Kansas City to look after family. It was a rough year, 2003. I later mentioned to a friend at work that "I think I just need to go sit on a beach with a book. I might want to go to Hawaii". My friend replied. "Save your money. Go to Mazatlan." Henry and Nadine, God bless you for your website. It works at home on the WebTV/MSNTV and I peek at it while at work every 25 minutes... I arrive on May 6th. On Friday, May 7th, I will wake up in the Hotel Playa Mazatlan on my birthday. I am the luckiest guy I know. So excited I can't stand myself, Mark.
My wife and I have only been into Mexico a few times. The last time was with our son in law who speaks fluent Spanish. We breezed through customs, checkpoints etc because he spoke the language. When I see kids that look like they are fifteen in the army carrying automatic rifles, jeeps with machine guns flying around the streets, it gives me pause. Then I hear Americans who have been going to Kinobay and San Carlos for 20 years with no problem. Am I just a overfearful American??? or do they know something I don't????. Help we want to enjoy our fun in the sun years. Phil and Pat Merritt.
We just returned from our first trip to Mazatlan on Wed. April 14, we had a great time and many memorable experiences. Since this site is so complete and contains so much information on food, lodging, sites and activities, I feel it would be redudndant to write about all the same things covered so completely by those who have gone before. I do feel, however, that since the focus of our trip was on surfing and the pursuit of finding those perfect beach hideways, that I would like to focus on sharing the experiences and insight I gained in this particular area. Two day before departure I was very troubled to learn that I would not be able to take my surfboards on the flight due to airport security for the Easter holiday and the "code orange" terror alert. This was a major concern that was quickly and easily overcome. I had read about the Palm surf shop (on this site an others) and asked directions to it from a couple of locals, both of whom refered me to the Mazatlan Surf Center next door to Dairy Queen on Ave.Camarón Sábalo. MSC has been in business for just over a year and is run by Alistar and Bongo both top notch world-class surfers. I had the pleasure of meeting Alistar and he gave me a great deal on a long term rental and had a pretty good selection of boards for every size and skill level, he speaks excellent english and gave me very accurate directions and a hand drawn map to a couple of other surf spots a short drive from the city. I never made it to the Palm Surf Shop so I don't know what their selection or prices are like but I got the distinct impression from the locals I talked to and the outside facade of the store that it is more focused on beachwear, swimwear and surf fashion, rather than a hard-core surf shop like MSC We reserved a car online through Travelocity (National Car rental)for around $175 for a week with unlimited mileage, although I have read on this site and others that a car is not necessary, we found it quite indispensable and very economical for our needs. I checked with my credit card company and since I reserved and paid for the car with a Platinum card, all the insurance, including LDW and damage collison waiver were covered by my card company provided I did NOT purchase any other form of insurance, be sure and check with your own card company to make sure that you are covered in Mexico. The check-in went smoothly and quickly as did rental car return. There was a large 6 foot to 8 foot south swell working the day we arrived. I could even see a rivermouth break from the air woking due west of the airport with white surf lines extending out four or more sand bars, I was later told this is a break called "Little Hawaii" and even got directions to it. We drove into town on one of the many streets that run thru the "El Centro" market and came out on Paseo Claussen near the Marine College just south of Playa Norte, this surf break is known as Los Pinos or Cannons it is a left pointbreak with a great A-frame peak that moves along the reef, the wave is fairly easy to catch works best on a high or incoming tide and is very rippable. There is sometimes a crowd with a number of bodyboarders who sit very deep inside, next to the rocks, there is basically two take-off zones depending on the swell size and angle, I didn't have any hassles with the local surfers but let them all catch waves before I caught one and was just mindful to take turns, this was my favorite wave in Mazatlan, a note of caution -the bottom is sharp rock with thousands of urchins, DO NOT under any circumstances put you feet down on the bottom or try to push off the bottom, when wiping out try to stay in the thickest part of the wave and immediatley paddle for the deep water channel away from shore. The next surf spot I checked out was at Valentino's, this is probably Mazatlan's best known surf break for it's stadium like location with lots of tourist watching the actionfrom above and bellow the sea wall and lots of surfers competeing for waves. This spot is actually two very different breaks although it is usually just lumped together by most refernce sources as a "point breaking left and right". The takeoff zones for the left and right are actually about 200 meters apart seperated by the point. The right is a very fast, very hollow wave that only works on a decent size swell, the takeoff is steep and ledgy and requires the surfer to aim straight for a rock outcrop and either execute a quick and powerful bottom turn or drop in angled, sort of pre-slotted into the face. This wave is also very rocky with lots of urchins, if you wipeout on the takeoff you WILL be dragged over the sharp rocks, very painful! There is another takeoff spot a little further away from the rocks but most of those waves, at least while I was there, were closeouts, offering only a few second ride before collapsing on you head. The left is much slower, easier and mushier, but also rocky, as for which one is working watch the locals to see which side they are sitting at. Both right and left were crowded and competetive when breaking good. Playa Bruja is basically a beach break with some rock out crops on a west or north swell I would imagine it is a pretty decent right break wrapping around the point (punta Cerritos) I never caught this spot going off good, speaking of Cerritos, the north side of the point is a calm tranquil beach which as I am told holds a fun peeling wave on huge hurricane swells when everywhere else is to big and gnarly to surf. Heading further north about 20 kilometers is a totaly uncrowded beach with a left point, reef and beach break, called Marmal (sp?) this spot is reached by taking hwy 15 tollroad toward Culican, at the last overpass before the tollbooth turn toward the coast (to the west) although the overpass is a cloverleaf affair. The road is dirt and a little rough, travel about 10 kilometers to Marmal go through the town you will pass through another very poor village and then onto a beach with lots of panga launches, wade through the estuary to the sand island and this will give you a good view of this spot and how it's breaking. it takes a good swell to get the point break going but the beach break would probably be OK on any swell. This spot is kinda of sketchy with the poverty and total lack of tourists or outsiders, don't go alone or leave your stuff sitting out. There is a rocky boneyard on the inside, hard to see from the lineup. South of Mazatlan Centro I surfed 2 spots and checked out another, the first and best is the right point off of the tip of Stone Island (isla Piedras) To get there take the watertaxi next to the panga fleet near the Navy dock, fare is 10 pesos round trip, hike the 1 Kilometer or so to the point, I believe this is called "Escorellos", this wave is fast hollow and challenging many consider this the best wave in the area. It has a rock bottom a pitching ledge and breaks over rock, there wasn't a big crowd the day I was there but the few people out were aggresive and very good surfers. Also on Stone Island (which is not actually an island but a penisula) are twom more spots on i don't know the name for but I dubbed it "Restaurants" again take the water taxi and hike about 1 1/2 to 2 kilometers past all the palapa restaurants to where the beach curves, someone had just built a very small palapa restuarant with just a few tables and chairs just in front of the break, a fun, sometimes hollow sand bottom beach break, it is best in the morning with offshores it tends to shutdown and close out with side shores that start blowing mid morning, the last spot I only looked at and did not surf this was the rivermouth break I saw from the plane, take the road leading to the airport and take the last Isla Piedras exit, if you get to the airport exit you've gone about 3 kilometers too far, this road is dirt and doesn't go all the way to the beach, it is a sand bottom break called "little Hawaii" it stacks up like a triangle breaking a few sand bars out at a narrow peak and expanding out over the inside sand bars and looks to have some potential. I also surfed a little around the punta Sábalo area south of the new marina - from the Hotel Carravelle north past the Luna Palace to the Point the beach curves and has a few small breakwaters, the three islands break up and reduce the swell which is not a bad thing when the swell is large and closing out at the other better known breaks, these are for the most part sand bottom, short rides with no crowds. Well there is a brief synopsis on the surf scene in and around Mazatlan I am sure it is in no way a complete and accurate picture since I was there for only a week but I did draw upon all the local knowledge I could as well as all the written resources I could get my hands on.
I just wanted to thank and congratulate you on your site. It's exellent. I'm originally from Mazatlan but haven't been there in years. I really miss it. Your site helps bring back memories. Thank you again. Hope to see you and Nadine there next year. Martha
The best book I have ever seen on Mazatlan was written by Oses Cole-Isunza. It is a very complete book and is put out by the Mazatlan Red Cross. Each book purchased helps the Red Cros but it is also the best book about Mazatlan and the surrounding area. The book only sell for $10.00. Anyone interested in Mazatlan will treaure it.
I am planning a service learning trip to Mazatlan. We are searching for a place where we can work with children (about 2 weeks. We are pre-school teachers and administrators and as part of the training that we are taking we will be working on a site (about 6 hrs. a day) We have been working in Guadalajara at a Casa Hogar- teaching the teachers and the children crafts, songs, etc. plus helping the teachers in their rooms. We will be bringing educational materials to leave whereever we will be working. This is a great opportunity for an orphanage (casa Hogar) to get some great items, plus learn some new ways to teach in the classroom and playground. I keep seeing Cd. de los Niños on the internet. Does anyone have experience with them? do they really need help, or is there another more needy place in Mazatlan that might need more help? Thanks..please email me mercedessuzanne@yahoo.com with any suggestions. This is for the end of June 2004. 8 women adults - not teens! Mercy Dueñas
Your website is fantastic and was the deciding factor in our choice to vacation there. Will check back once we have had the pleasure of experiencing Mazatlan!
I just got home from Mazatlan a few days ago , and it is deffinatly the place to be. It was my second time there and i'm soo in love with Mazatlan , I am really thinking about moving there. If anyone has any tips , or was thinking about moving there as well feel free to email me anytime.
My husband and I along with our two best friends will be heading to Mazatlan on April 30th - May 7th. We would like to get your opinion about a few things. We will be staying at Torres Mazatlan and the pictures we have been given of this property do not give enough information. Have you ever seen it? What does it look like to you? Does it have easy access to the Golden Zone? (ie. inexpensive cab rides..approx. rates?) We checked the website for Sunterra.com and the pictures are not very good. Next, my husband and his buddy have been toying with the idea of deep sea fishing, however the rates are too high! Could you suggest anyone imparticular or have any friends that you can refer us to? Lastly, This is right smack in the middle of Cinco De Mayo. What happens out there during this time? I didn't see anything in your news reports about upcoming special events. Thanks so much for the information you have provided us. You guys are wonderful to go through all this for tourists. We just love it. We'll let you know how it went when we return. The Hartmans
hello, me and 2 of my friends are going to mazatlan on 3-27-04 to 4-3-04.we are staying at the granada at el cid i was just wondering if that hotel is nice resort or not.i was also wondering what the tempature of the water is thank you.
Mazatlan is nice, but Kino Bay in Sonora Mexico is also a great spot. Endless beaches, uncrowded and storng Spanish heritage and culture makes this a great destination for vacation or retirement. Not much info on the area available over the net, but some can be found at www.kinobayestates.com or www.kinobay.com Check it out...the area is incredible.
We are coming there in early April and I want to bring my laptop to download pictures from my digital camera and watch DVD's on the plane. We are staying at the Hotel Playa and wondering if the laptop will be safe in the room. I was planning on leaving the laptop hidden in a suitcase or something. Would it be best to leave it home?
Henry & Nadine, your website is awesome! We are arriving March 26, 2004 with your recommendations in hand. I know I saw an item you wrote about donating childrens clothing to an orphanage (bring an suitcase full of clothes, fill it up with souvenirs for the way home), but for the life of me, I can't find it now. If you find some time before this Friday, would you please point it out to me? Thank you so much!
Val and Jack sent me a link to your site before we left for Mazatlan.....loved it.I printed alot of the information out to read on the plane, Enjoyed it then and I am enjoying it now. The trip to Copala was excellent.... showing my family that was left back here in Canada ....what they missed. Thank - You Henry, Val, and Jack for the great time in Copala. Thank -You both Henry/Nadine for all the time and effort you have put into this site...well worth it!!! Hope to see you the next time Angie (vals sis)
I just stumbled on this site, and I sure hope someone can help me out. My wife and I will be spending an anniverisary in Mazatlan April 14-21, we are staying at an all inclusive resort well north of town but just south of the new marina. i like to surf and my wife likes to sleep and enjoy quiet and solitude, hence the decision to be far north of town, my concerns are finding good surf nearby and also finding a good surf shop. We are flying Continental and they charge an arm and a leg to transport surfboards, around $100 per board each way so I was hoping to be able to buy a good used board somewhere or possbily a long term rental. We will be renting a car so getting around won't be much of a problem, any advice on where a good mellow point or reef break is? I am 40 and although I'm an advanced surfer I am not into neck snapping, slamming tubes and beach breaks but looking for a long mellow wave for cruising. We are also considering going deep sea fishing for a half day, any advice on reasonably priced super-pangas or low-end sportfishers? We sould need something with all the tackle and bait provided. Thanks for the great site, I am enjoying reading the experiences, comments and adventures.
Hola everyone. Just returned from our 2nd home Feb 17. Just missed all the rain that they had. Was there for 3 weeks. The water is safe there. Just as the man before me said. We have a kitchette and the hotel provided us with 1, 5 gal jug every week. We had to pay 20pesos for any addtional bottle. We only needed 1. We washed our fruit and vegs in that water and did the dishes in the tap water. The weather was great for the most part. If you have the facilities, you could probably take down a bbq with you providing you're there long enough. It worked great for us on the balcony. You can buy them down there at Walmart for around 150p. They are small enough to pack in your suitcase as we do. Any of the sites that I have come across never mentions Aree LuLu's resturant. It is behind the Shrimp Factory on the Ave. They have great service and great food. The prices are really reasonable. The Factory wanted 188p for a 1lb lobster with rice and vegs. LuLu's wanted 180p and you got 1lb lobster with 2 battered shrimp, 2 bacon wrapped shrimp and 4 mahi mahi fish sticks with rice and vegs. Know where the better deal is. They are redoing the malecon. They are widening it. I was told last year that the city was going to make the AVe Del Mar ( main drag) into 6 lanes but it can't be with the way the malecon is looking. It will be beautiful when it's fininshed. They have done a lot of work in the last year because it wasn't started when we left around Mar 8 last year.If you decide to go for a walk south on the beach (towards downtown) make sure that you want to make a hike. There was only 1 access way to the street for at least a good mile or more. We lucked out because some of the work men let us up their path way which I'm sure they shouldn't but it was a long way till the next access. If you go on the small catamran ride make sure that you only take your swim suit, shoes(to get to the boat) and the money to pay them. Got soaked and it wasn't a windy day. Will do it next year again for sure. Went to Captain David beside Balboa Towers. Only 250p for a trip around the island and the other guys were 300 and up. Tell him Al capone with blonde hair sent you. Not nearly as busy as last year. Waiter say it's down 40% and I believe it. Not many younger ppl either. I felt young and thin and I'm 43. Some of the timeshare ppl at the cafes can be a bother but just tell them no and we didn't have a problem. WE did go to the Mayan presentation. Thanks for the free breakfast, the city tour and $100US. It did take longer than expected. They say 90 mins, so next time I do something like that I will tell them that they have 90 from this time and that's it no matter where they are in the presentation. They sure make things look so good but keep in mind that you are there for the free gifts and not to buy a timeshare, unless you are really interested in buying one. Waiters make 45p per DAY so make sure that you tip accordingly at any cafe. H and N mention about the Juarez market. A must to see. We have friends that live only a few blocks from it and go with them every year. It is only open on Sun.I believe that it opens around 5-6am so be there early as there are a ton of ppl. Hope no one except for the partiers are going to be staying at the Riveria over Spring break. With Bora Bora, Tony's and also being The headquarters for the main student tour company you better make sure that you get some sleep in the early afternoon or early evening because the clubs will be going till at least 4-5am. Then the students come back to the hotel and do who knows what till when. Remember that you can always go knocking on their door around 8:30am and it's mistakingly the wrong room and you happended to get them out of bed or you happen to be phoning another room and you dial the wrong room #. Gees I'm sorry for waking you up!!! Glad I won't be there. Hear it's a nice place most any other time. Got the best rate at the American Express office. I'm Canadian and the best rate we got was around 8.3-8.35 as low as 8.16 (from Jan 30-Feb15. Make sure that you sign the chq in the right place because at least 5 ppl didn't do that in 2 days and other ppl signed them in line to speed things up. Tourists complain about the line up but it's not Martha (teller) fault it's the tourists that screw up and that's what takes the time. Get it right. Is it the first time you've ever cashed a travellers chq? Hope I was some help to those that still are waiting to go to this place called home. If you have any questions mail me. Pedro.
To Janet........Your concerns about the water are valid. In general, "mexican tap water", should be avoided. However, most resorts have water purification systems. We still stick to bottled water for drinking just to be cautious. And most Mazatlan restaurants will serve good water. They would not survive if they served water that created problems. You should definitely ask about the water system at your hotel and stock up on bottled water to be safe. Have fun...........r
MY HUSBAND AND I AND ANOTHER COUPLE WILL BE COMING THERE IN APRIL. MY HUSBAND AND MY FRIEND MIKE HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WATER THERE. I DO ALSO. I'M KIND OF NOT SURE TO DRINK THE WATER THERE. I LOOKED AT ALL THE PICTURES YOU HAVE ON THE WEBSITE AND WE CANNOT WAIT TO COME IN APRIL. THAT IS REALLY THE ONLY CONCERN THAT WE HAVE RIGHT NOW. THANKS, JANET VENTURA
My wife and I recently spent ten days in Mazatlan at the new Loro de Oro Inn. It is a wonderful, comfortable, economical and superbly located place to stay in Oldtown Mazatlan. Tony, and his daughter Lyca, are warm and attentive hosts. We like Mazatlan well enough to have decided to retire there and would not look further than the Loro de Oro for any future vacation visits.

I was trying to find information on the "Tropic of Cancer" and I came across your website. Not only did you explain where it was, but also what it was and why it was so named. I found your explanation very informative and easily understood as well as being very well written and amusing - so much so, it made me explore your website because I wanted to find out more about Mazaltan. I found heaps of information, and although we live so far away in Australia it has made my wife and I want to visit, but unfortunately, being pensioners we don't think we would be able to afford it. However, all my life I have wanted to visit New Orleans (being a Traditional Jazz enthusiast) and if we ever get around to taking that trip, we will definitely visit your wonderful-sounding city. Thanks again for a terrific website, George.
My wife and I will be in Mazatlan from 4/2/04 thru 4/10/04 and are looking for a place to stay. We are not interested in new high rise hotels, but rather smaller "mom and pop" type places, near the beach with a pool and out of town would be fine. We should have started this search a few months ago, but any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi, Just wanted to let you know that your website information helped to save a 2 week vacation in Mazatlan for a couple from Canada in their 80's. When we met them at our hotel, the wife was very unhappy that her husband was having so much pain in his legs that they we're virtually captives in the hotel. Since they had booked for 2 weeks, they were planning on just counting the days until they could return home to see what their doctors could do for him. We had printed your information on Dr. Guzman in case we ever needed a doctor in Mazatlan, so we gave the printout to them and told them to call him. They did and the next day they thanked us profusely. Dr. Guzman had already made the husband feel 100% better (apparently he was retaining way too much water in his legs for one thing) and they were now able to get around and enjoy their vacation. Although we got the thank you's, it really belongs to you for the wonderful information you provide on this site. Thanks again! Jim Rock
Hola........What a wonderful site this is. I am finalizing our plans (Yo, wife and two young sons)for "my" 9th trip to Mazatlan. This time it will be TWO weeks in May. I've worn all sombreros from teenager with parents to college spring break to long haired solo traveler to man with wife and kids. We love Pueblo Bonito and it is endearing to us as we spent our honeymoon there 6 years ago. We are now "owners" there. Go E-Bay!! Any tips on babysitting services as this time we will be without Grandma? Want a good tip?..........Take an extra big bag FULL of clothes. Deliver it to Ciudad de Los Ninos during your stay. It will warm your heart and then you have a large/empty bag to bring back all of your purchases. Do it!!! Enjoy Sinaloa............rich
My husband and I will be leaving for MZT Feb 24 (for our 12th time). We have made many friends there and this year I would like to bring some small gifts, so I'm looking for some ideas. I need ideas for adult men, their wives and children (all girls, ages 13, 8 and 14 months). I can't afford to spend a lot, but I would like to get something they can't buy in Mexico. Any suggestions? Please e-mail me. Thanks! As most of you we love Mazatlan more than anyplace on earth!!! We call it our home away from home! You'll never meet nicer people!
We are leaving March 2nd 2004 for our 5th trip / stay in Mazatlan. We're hooked on Torres Mazatlan ! March in Mazatlan, there is NO other place we rather be ! We had 5 family members join us last year and others will join us again this year ...... Come on March 2nd !
We are planning a trip in April and was wondering where the best place is to stay... We would like to stay for 10 days to 2 weeks... I'd like some info on Air, Hotels, or maybe a bed and breakfast??? Thanks for the lovely site... I have earmarked it for future reference.
I and my family spent the Christmas week of '03 in Mazatlan. We loved it. We stayed at the Hotel Playa Mazatlan. Which although it is one of the older hotels, it has been kept up nicely and is right on the beach. I have however two warnings to pass along. The first is a simple travel advisory. As Harry and Nadine mention on the site, there isn't much consciousness regarding night noise in Mazatlan. At least not at the Hotel Playa Mazatlan. Our rooms faced the street, through a barrier of sorts, yet on the street is a bar/disco called Gringolingo or something to that effect. The noise level from the place is excruciating. If you prefer to sleep between 10 pm and 2:30 am then be sure not reserve a room within that area of the Hotel where you can hear this disco. It's distressing that the city does not respect this grand old Hotel Playa Mazatlan enough to restrict the amount of noise that this bar is generating. Very short sighted all around. It's also unfortunate however that the Hotel itself does not warn you about the situation. Secondly I was astonished to see that the beautiful street which runs along the beach between old town Mazatlan and the "Golden Zone" is being expanded to a six lane highway, three lanes going each way. My warning in this case is to the city fathers. Please don't do it!!! That whole area from the Golden Zone to Old Town Mazatlan should be conserved and beautified. There is also an incredible lagoon behind this road which could be incorporated into a wondrous eco tourist zone. The main traffic should be placed behind the lagoon and channeled from the road which goes to Culiacan around to the back of Old Mazatlan. Fifty years ago the Malecon use to have horse pulled buggies, if that street were to be "conserved" and reduced in size it could once again have those quaint methods of transportation and Mazatlan would have a fighting chance of once again becoming the Pearl of the Pacific which it once was.
thank you for your great web site -- a question -- what is the ocean water temperature this time of year ( january - february)
This is a great site, have been here before, but never read much of the feedback. I am glad I did this time! We too, are returning to Mazatlan in about a month! We, 8 of us, were there 2 years ago. We fell in love with it, and actually ended up buying a time share at Emerald Bay. This year there will be 10 of us going. Can't wait! We were also wondering about transportation into the city. Does anyone know if the buses run out that far yet? We were at the Vidafel our first trip, and were able to get buses into town at that time. Thanks to anyone who can help.
You have a great site. There is some very useful information I am heading to Mazatland in a couple of weeks and I was wondering if I should take Canadian dollars and convert to Pesos when I get there or if I should take US dollars with me and use them instead of Pesos. Any information on which one will give me the best value would be appreciated. Murray
